Small Cap Stock Investing

Small Cap Stock Investing
Invest and Grow Exponentially with Them
Small cap investing is about investing in companies with market capitalization range from $300 million to $2 billion (subject to time and market location as well).

However, small cap stocks should not be confused with penny stocks. Penny stocks may be cheap on an absolute price per share basis, but their total market capitalization may actually be larger than average.

Small cap stock investing may give better returns than other stocks. With a smaller base assets and profits, some of these companies are able to grow at faster pace than the large companies. However, many of them are under researched and thus are not widely followed by the broad market.

Other than not having much publicity, most investors seldom focus on small capitalization stocks because of another reason. Because of their smaller capital base, these companies; especially those that are badly managed, are generally more vulnerable than larger companies during economic downturn.

In addition, these small and mid cap stock prices tend to be fluctuate significantly in a day. Drastic changes in stock price happen because of low liquidity. As demand and supply rules in stock market, if there is no demand for the stock which an investor is selling, he will be forced to accept lower prices and vice versa.

In the case of small cap stock investing, any decent liquidity often comes at sporadic intervals, which makes it difficult to buy or sell these stocks quickly without significantly affecting their stock prices. When a fund manager or someone who is holding these stocks in bulk needs to sell off their shares quickly, he probably ends up getting a much lower price than the one he asked for.

In bull market, small cap stock prices may be pushed up easily from the high demand. But, when the market conditions remain soft for a prolonged period, small cap stocks are likely to suffer even more.
Even when market sentiment improves, it normally takes the heavyweight stocks to push the indices up first before buying interest spreads to the small cap stocks.

But some of these small cap stocks are in attractive niche markets. Those markets are small enough that large companies may not find them lucrative enough to become their competitors.

Many of these smaller companies are ignored by most institutional investors who prefer to buy more well-known stocks rather than taking the risk of investing in something that is not known. This may lead to great opportunities for retail investors because it means that it is possible to find good and yet undervalued stocks.

Remember, you are not a fund manager and you do not have to buy only the famous stocks. Fund managers are seldom wanted to stick their necks out to invest in something that is less known to investors.

Most growth fund managers in the US own stocks like GE, Microsoft, Pfizer and Wal-Mart which are all well known. So, when their portfolios do not perform well, they can blame those big companies for failing to deliver, and never admit that they have failed to make the right investment decision.

To be successful in small cap stock investing that can offer great potential gains is very though, but doing your homework helps spot the rising starts.

Fundamental investing strategy is very useful in picking up these winners.

Remember to stick with EPSGR, ROE, D/E and profit margin in evaluating them.
